The Creative Process

This short clip from Craneway Event is the collaboration of the late choreographer Merce Cunningham and filmmaker/artist Tacita Dean. An old Ford factory turned dance studio looks out over the San Francisco Bay. The silhouetted dancers skip onto the scene having never heard the ambient music before the performance. At one point, a sailboat floats by in the background, adding another element of randomness and fluid grace to the dance. This peak into the creative process of the legendary Cunningham is very much like watching a painter create a beautiful portrait, using all the tools of technique and years of practice while embracing the randomness of each moment.
